The Revolutionary Run features a certified 5K and 10K. Here's why that little badge matters more than you might think.

You've probably seen it on race registration pages: "USATF Certified Course." It sounds official — and it is — but what does it actually mean for you as a runner? And why does it matter that the Revolutionary Run's 5K and 10K carry that certification?

Let's break it down.

What is USATF?

USA Track & Field (USATF) is the national governing body for track and field, long-distance running, and race walking in the United States. Among its many responsibilities, USATF oversees a rigorous course certification program that ensures road race distances are accurately and verifiably measured.

What makes a course "certified"?

To earn USATF certification, a course must be measured using a very precise method called the Jones Counter Method — named after Alan Jones, the British runner who helped develop it. A trained, licensed measurer rides a calibrated bicycle along every inch of the course, recording the exact distance via a mechanical counter attached to the front wheel.

The counter is calibrated before and after measurement on a known steel-tape reference course.

The measurement principle is to find the shortest possible route a runner could legally take — so if anything, a certified course is guaranteed to be at least as long as advertised, never shorter.

The measurer then submits documentation to USATF, which reviews the data, issues a unique certification number, and places the course in a national database. Certifications are valid for 10 years, after which the course must be re-measured if any changes are made to the route.

Why does it matter for your PR?

Here's the thing: if you run a personal record on an uncertified course, most race governing bodies — including the Boston Athletic Association, USATF, and World Athletics — won't accept it as an official time. Want to qualify for the Boston Marathon? Your qualifying race must be run on a certified course. Chasing a USATF Age Group award or a national ranking? Certified course required.

Even if you're not chasing Boston or awards, there's a deeper satisfaction in knowing your 5K PR was run on a course that is provably, precisely 3.107 miles — not 3.0 miles, not 3.2 miles. A certified course is the gold standard of race distance integrity.

The Revolutionary Run's certified races

Both the 5K and 10K at this year's Revolutionary Run on July 4th at Washington Crossing Historic Park are USATF certified. That means your finish time is valid for official records, age group rankings, and qualifying standards. Run your heart out — every second counts, and every meter is accounted for.

Not chasing a PR? No problem. The 1-mile Fun Run/Walk is the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day with the whole family — strollers, kids, and patriotic costumes are all part of the fun. It's not certified, and it doesn't need to be. It's about the joy of moving together through one of the most historically significant parks in America. Whether you are doing the 1 mile fun run/walk, the certified 5k or the certified 10k for fun, family or PB - it doesn't matter as long as you have fun!

Run where history was made

Washington Crossing Historic Park is the site of George Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776 — a turning point in the American Revolution. Running these roads on the Fourth of July isn't just a workout. It's a living connection to the people and places that shaped this country. There's no better backdrop for a race that takes its name seriously.

Ready to run? Join us at Washington Crossing Historic Park this July 4th. Register today for the certified 5K, certified 10K, or the 1-mile Fun Run/Walk at www.revrunPA.com.
