Guardians of the National Cemetery Color Guard to Open the 44th Annual RevRun

This Fourth of July, before a single runner takes a step in the 44th Annual Revolutionary Run, we'll pause for one of the most meaningful traditions in American civic life: the presentation of the colors.

We're proud to announce that the Color Guard of the Guardians of the National Cemetery in Washington Crossing will present the flags at the start of all three RevRun races - the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, the USATF-Certified 5K, and the USATF-Certified 10K -  immediately before the National Anthem.

What Is a Color Guard?

A color guard is a ceremonial unit, traditionally composed of military veterans, tasked with carrying and presenting the national and organizational flags during formal events. The tradition dates back centuries, when flags and colors were carried into battle to mark a unit's position and rally troops. Today, color guards serve a ceremonial role, opening events with a formal flag presentation that honors the flag, the nation, and all who have served.

A color guard presentation includes a precise, practiced sequence: members march the flags into position, present them in formation, and hold them at attention throughout the National Anthem. Every movement - from the way the flags are carried to how they're held - follows long-standing military tradition and is performed with care and precision.

Volunteers Who Continue to Serve

Every member of the Guardians of the National Cemetery Color Guard is a veteran who volunteers their time to honor fellow service members and their families. They regularly present colors at burial services and memorial events at the cemetery, offering dignity and ceremony to those being laid to rest. Their commitment to service didn't end when their military careers did - it continues every time they step forward with the flag.

A Fitting Tribute on Our Nation's Birthday

With 2026 marking America's 250th anniversary, and the RevRun taking place at Washington Crossing Historic Park itself, this opening ceremony — the Color Guard, the musket start, and the National Anthem — sets the tone for a morning that celebrates community, history, and the freedoms we often take for granted.

Following the Color Guard's presentation of the flags, the National Anthem will be performed by Colleen Mellor — marking her 5th consecutive year lending her voice to the RevRun. Her return is a cherished part of our race morning tradition, and we're grateful to have her back again this year.

A Musket Start, Not a Horn

This year, each race will kick off in true Revolutionary fashion: instead of a starting horn, each of the three races will be started by the firing of a musket, fired by a Washington Crossing Historic Park reenactor, Mr. Patrick Murphy.  It's a fitting nod to the history that surrounds us - right at the site where General Washington led his troops across the Delaware River.
